The surrounding countryside is largely unspoilt, primarily agricultural with spectacular views. Many of the local towns and villages seem relatively unchanged since they were built centuries ago. There are many chateaux that are worth visiting and a number of important pre-historic sites. The river valleys of the Dordogne and Lot are easily reached and offer boat trips and canoe hire.
Nearby are several lakes with sandy beaches for swimming, sailing fishing and windsurfing. There are tennis courts in Monségur, Eymet and La Réole. Also horse riding and several golf courses are within easy reach. The countryside around the area is magnificent for cyclists and Bike hire is available locally.
The area is renowned throughout France for its traditional cuisine and good value meals. The restaurants are excellent, ranging from those recommended by the major Guides to local family-run establishments offering a full three or four course menu with wine for around 15 Euros.
We are close to the Bergerac, Duras and Marmandais wine-growing areas and the vineyards of Bordeaux and St Emillion are very close. Most growers welcome visitors for tastings and will sell wine direct. We will happily contact them and arrange a visit for you.
In general, shopping is easy and can be a delight. Local shops and markets offer a mouth-watering variety of fresh food and regional delicacies. Monségur has a good boulangerie, butcher, small supermarket, pharmacy, banks and post office. It also has a traditional market on Friday mornings. Duras, Eymet, La Réole and Langon all have a good range of shops and wonderful weekly markets. Bergerac, Langon, Marmande and Bordeaux have more cosmopolitan shops and excellent hypermarkets.
If you feel like some sort of evening entertainment apart from eating and drinking there is a regular weekly jazz evening in Les Colonnes restaurant and a cinema in Monségur which regularly has showings in English. Monségur also holds it’s Swing Jazz Festival the first weekend in July every year. |
